Why when I tap on the bottom of a hot ceramic mug of coffee, etc. the noise gets higher in pitch every second?
Try it! Next time you pour a fresh mug of coffee, tea or hot chocolate tap the bottom of the mug (from inside the mug) with a spoon over and over. The pitch of the tapping while get higher and higher. Why is this?
As the beverage cools, it "shrinks" in volume (the hotter the less dense, the cooler the more dense), so the actual volume of liquid decreases. And when a container has a lower volume, higher density liquid inside, it will ring with a higher pitch.
