Have there been any estimates as to when the ISS tool bag will eventually drop out of orbit?
It has been fun to be able to spot something as small as this with my binoculars, knowing how far away it actually is. The space station is easy to spot, especially now, but the tool bag is a bit of a challenge. How long do I have before it reenters? I expect it may be years yet.
I have been using my cheap 7x35 binoculars and have seen it a few time.
Heavens Above is a great site to get tracking information on all sorts of satellites, including the tool bag.
I have seen any decay estimates for the toolbag. At the Heavens Above website, there is a plot of the orbital height of the ISS: http://www.heavens-above.com/IssHeight.aspx?lat=0&lng=0&loc=Unspecified&alt=0&tz=CET
You can see how its decrease in height is accelerating, currently nearly 3 km per month. The toolbag won't have the same drag coefficient, but the drop in height may be vaguely similar. Maybe it'll last another 18 months, but that's a pure guess.
I haven't yet seen the toolbag, despite trying a couple of times. I'll have to have another look, since it currently passes over my location every evening.
Later:
A bit of further checking reveals that the toolbag has decreased in height from 352 to 270 km in the 8 months since it was lost from the ISS. Once it gets below 200km, it won't last very long. I would therefore revise my estimate to say that it probably won't last much beyond the end of the year.
