2005 Pontiac Bonneville Speedometer Gage Lock Up?
I notticed this last winter, when you start the car the speedometer gauge works fine, then will freeze at whatever speed you were going, and then when it desides to work again it will zero out at the speed you were prevoisly going. If it stoped working at 65 then it thinks 65 is 0. Occasionaly it will drop the speed by 10mph, usualy after setting for a while, then starting back up. This summer I have noticed it only did it when car sat in the sun, or I wasn't using the ac. This leeds me to belive that somthing is getting to hot and making it quit. Cruse controll, and RPM still work. This happens to the temp gauge, although I am not as worried about that. What can I do to fix this?
GM has a TSB on your car, the Silverado, Escalade, Malibu, and Impala for this condition. The problem is the printed circuit board inside the instrument cluster is shorting out. They have to replace it for you, and reprogram it. There is no part number available yet. The cost is $275.00 for the cluster, .6 to R&R the cluster, and 1.0 hour diag and reprogramming. The total cost will run about $450.00 at most dealerships. I deal with these daily, and certain years on these have been recalled, while some have not.
