Silicon Carbide

What is silicon carbide used for and why are its properties suited to this?

Yeah I get the message, you don't need to write that on every single one of my questions!! I would ask my teacher but I'm off on holiday for two weeks, so instead of waiting all that time without a clue, I thought I would ask some questions I'm stuck on on here if thats ok with you! Everyone is entitled to ask questions on here you know. This isn't homework, so no I'm not cheating.. this is actually extra revision I'm doing at home so I am learning by asking on here. I'm sure my teachers wouldn't mind. I do ask them when I'm at school. Thank you for the advice though! :)

SiC is used for many different things, from low tech to high tech. Two examples: SiC particles are used as abrasives and they work well because SiC is fairly hard and the small pieces have nice sharp edges and corners. SiC is also used as a substrate for certain types of integrated circuits. SiC works well for this application because, when grown as a single crystal and prepared with the correct crystallographic orientation, the deposited layers that actually form the integrated circuit form an epitaxial orientation with respect to the SiC crystal and this orientation is beneficial for the eletrical performance of the device.
