Circles and geometry question?
A flange is shaped like a square with a circle cut from the center of it. How many square centimeters is the area of the flange? Round to the nearest hundredth.
-Thats the question, okay so theres a square with a picture of the circle thats cut out in it and on both sides of the circle there is a line connecting the outside of the circle to the square(a dimension) on both sides of this circle that read 8cm and on the bottom of the square it says 24cm i dont know if that is just the length of the bottom of the square or the perimeter? anybody know what to do?
So is that a square that measures 24cm on a side, and the circle is cut from the middle so that the circle is 8cm from all four sides (i.e., the shortest distance from the circle to any of the 4 sides is always 8)?
If that's the case, then the diameter of the circle is 24 - 8 - 8 = 8cm. That means the radius is 4. So the area of the circle is A = pi r^2 = 16pi square centimeters.
To find the area of the flange, subtract this from the area of the square.
