How can I drill a hole .015" in diameter through glass?
Does anyone know of a method for drilling tiny holes in glass? I am trying to drill a very small hole through a cover slide so I can insert a tube .015" in diameter. I don't know if that diameter is the inside or outside diameter of the hose though...
If anyone knows any sources of information I could read more about this it would be great.
Thanks
Does anyone know of a small hand tool that can use bits .015" or .4mm? I figure I could start by trying that...
It's likely that the .015" is the inside diameter since there is likely a lot of variability in the thickness of the tube itself.
To drill a tiny hole in glass you would probably need a very sharp bit at very high speeds to avoid putting a lot of pressure/stress on the glass itself. Glass is frustratingly brittle when you work with it.
Your best bet would be to try and drill the .015" hole first and test fitting the tube. If it doesn't fit, maybe use a glass file to ream the hole to a more workable size. You might want to use a lubricant (there are fitting lubricants for lab glassware and stoppers and the like) to try and fit the hose.
Sorry I don't have any sources for you. My projects always turn out to be a guess-check-revise effort. It takes a lot more work but I tend to waste a lot less material that way. So start conservatively with a hole that's probably too small and work your way up.
